Where to invest?
Too many people invest in a Managed or With-profits funds and then leave it there for ever! They are then surprised by the fact that 10 years after investing their pension (which is represented by a piece of paper in the filing cupboard) has not performed. What a waste!
Apart from the 4 main asset classes or Cash, bonds (fixed Interest), property, equities (shares), there are a number of other key investments worth considering for pensions.
All of them should be utilised into a diversified portfolio, spreading the risk and looking at the long term goal. For example you could consider also:
Commodity Funds
Agricultural Funds
Precious Metal
As you approach retirement, certainly in the last 2-5 years you should be considering less risk in your portfolio and be locking in the returns. Some of this can be done automatically, but we would say 5 years is along time to simply forget about your investment performance.
